Arowolo Olarenwaju Esther: WHEN NOT TO USE MAKEUP

Writing on WHEN NOT TO USE MAKEUP may be surprising because I make a living making women beautiful which includes but not limited to selling makeups and other cosmetic and beauty products.

But life is best lived observing the Law of backwards, so the number rule of the art of using a makeup is to know when it is best not to use it.  These are the few situations it is advisable not to use or wear a makeup.

  1. WHEN WE ARE ABOUT TO SLEEP:

It is best not to wear makeup at night before sleep because it will leave you with clogged pores, since so many makeup products have ingredients that block the pores.

When the pores are blocked, your skin gets bumpy. If you are acne-prone, it can even lead to breakouts. You might think it is late but you are effectively damaging your skin by neglecting to remove makeup at the end of the day.

Going to bed with your makeup on can cause acne.  Your skin is an organ and is constantly at work even when you are sleeping, it sweats and removes dead skin cells and other irritants from our pores.

When you apply makeup, you block your pores from releasing sebum, which may lead to visibly larger pores and acne overtime. It also dries out the skin and speeds up aging. When you sleep, skin regenerates and heals itself.

One night of sleeping with makeup on can and will disrupt the delicate balance of your skin and set you back. After a night with your makeup on, your skin will need about a week to restore its previous condition and to balance again everything.

Sleeping with mascara and eyeliner can be rubbed by your pillow and end up in your eyes, which can lead to significant eye irritation.

Sleeping with eye makeup repeatedly may result in the clogging of the tiny hair follicles and oil glands on your eyelids. When these areas become clogged, bacteria can build up and cause inflammation.

I recommend keeping makeup remover pads by your bed, to wipe across your face and eyes on those nights when you don’t have time to properly cleanse before getting into bed.

2. IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES:

During an allergic reaction, your body’s immune system reacts to certain foreign substances in a hostile manner.

When it encounters foreign “invaders,” your immune system springs into action by producing antibodies with the intent to destroy the unwanted substances.

The substance may not actually be harmful to your body, but your body perceives that it is— and that’s all that matters.

Even if the majority of the population can wear the same products without receiving the same hostile response from their immune system, if your body doesn’t accept these substances, there’s nothing you can do to convince it otherwise

If you discover that you have an allergy to a certain makeup, it may be difficult to know exactly which ingredient is causing your reaction. Unfortunately, the best way to figure this out may be trial and error. What causes an allergic reaction depends on each individual.

Allergies to makeup can occur the first time you use a product, or they can develop over time, so don’t discount your favorite foundation as the source of your skin problems.

If you have itching, redness, swelling or a rash in the area where you’ve applied makeup, it may be because you are allergic to it.

A makeup allergy can also lead to a more serious response, known as anaphylaxis . This potentially life-threatening reaction can show up as a sudden drop in blood pressure, pale skin, dizziness, lightheadedness, and difficulty breathing.

Anaphylaxis could lead to total respiratory failure or heart attack.

To find out if the source of the problem is the product you have used, a dermatologist can perform allergy tests on your skin.

3. DURING HOT WEATHER:

Hot weather is one of the worst time to put on makeup, because most of the times it ends up doing exactly the opposite of the reason it was applied in the first case.

Too much makeup in peak heat and humidity can clog your pores and trigger a breakout. These are some of the reasons why you should not wear a makeup during a hot weather.

Makeup Transfer

No matter how many times your favourite products promise they are transfer resistant, somehow they always manage to get on your clothes in the hot weather.

One minute you are sitting at your office or in a meeting in your new crisp white outfit, and the next your foundation is all over your shirt’s collar.

It feels like everything you put on your face will just melt right off in a matter of seconds so you constantly find yourself having to reapply your whole face.

Ridiculously Oily Skin

Even if you have a dry skin, extreme hot weather has a way of making everyone look oily. Even when you are not sweating, you find yourself reaching for tissue papers or touching up with powder every minute.

Death To Heavy Makeup

Full coverage makeup can look amazing for a night out, but during the hot day, heavy makeup is not advisable. Despite the urge to try to layer on as much as possible for maximum coverage, less is more when it comes to a hot weather beauty routine.

The thought of retiring your favorite full coverage foundation is devastating, but hot days requires us to try new things, even if it means going out with no makeup on.

4. WHEN THE PRODUCT IS NOT OF GOOD QUALITY:

Yes, you have made a mistake and have invested in a poor-quality makeup product, but you will be doing yourself harm if you insist on “not to waste your money”.

I am sure the amount of money you spent on buying a poor-quality beauty product cannot be compared to the pain of discovering a new pimple especially before you have to attend an event.

It is better to get rid of them than use it because poor quality makeup has a lot of disadvantages:

Bad quality Cosmetics and makeups can have bleaching and/or discoloration effect on your skin.  Issues like skin discoloration, patches, redness, brown pigmentation, blotches, and unevenness can easily happen when you use these products for a prolonged period of time.

What you should keep in mind is to never use these products excessively and throw them out as soon as they expire.

Use organic Makeup and invest in good quality makeup. At Looks By Larry (LBL), we have a lot of organic and good quality cosmetic products for different shades and skin colour.
